Cruella

There are so many great actors in Cruella, Emma Stone, Emma Thompson, Mark Strong, that it’s almost too bad that they are all overshadowed by another performance. That’s not to say that any of them did a poor job, they were all great, but sometimes you must give credit where it is due. I guess you will just need to listen to find out who the real star of the latest Disney live action adaption really is. ;-)

Wishmaster

We have been doing research for our next Rewind episode, but sometimes there’s a movie that sets itself apart from the fray. In a year that gave us Titanic and Good Will Hunting it could have been easy to miss Wishmaster, but do yourself a favor and make 90 minutes in your life this gem.

Army of the Dead

It’s been a very long time, but this week two of us actually sat in the same room and recorded an episode. The audio may sound a little different, but it was great to be back. Of course the only movie that could inspire us to break ourselves out of the “virtual” hell that we’ve been living in was Army of the Dead. We had many many MANY thoughts on this one, as we bounce back and forth between praise and criticism. The only thing we knew for sure…this movie didn’t need to be 2.5 hours long.

Enjoy!

Mortal Kombat

Hey…Hey you…GET OVER HERE…and listen to our new episode on Mortal Kombat. Somehow this franchise is still relevant more than 25 years after the original, and thanks to Mortal Kombat Annihilation, the bar was set staggeringly low. The latest incarnation did mange to clear that bar, but if you want to know by how much, you’ll just have to listen.

Director Spotlight: F. Gary Gray

On this week’s Director Spotlight episode, we discuss the films of F. Gary Gray. The spectrum is wide when it comes to the quality of each of his movies, but when he crushes it, he really really crushes it. Some of his movies are some the most rewatchable ones I have in my collection, while others I hope I never have to see again. So sit back as we break down the the highs and lows of F. Gary Gray.

Nobody

I think we all knew the day would come when Bob Odenkirk would become an action star. At 58 years of age, and thanks to Nobody, that day has finally arrived. Sometimes we leave make you listen to an episode to find out how we felt about a movie, but this time we will just say that we all loved it, you should go and watch it if you haven’t seen it, then circle back around and listen to this episode. It’s just the kind of movie we all need right now.

Oscars...WTF?!

So many thoughts about the Academy Awards this year. Believe it or not there were plenty of things that we really liked about the unusual format, but somehow it still turned into one of the biggest messes ever for the Academy. So many questions that we'll never get answers to.

So if you were just as confused as we were, sit back and listen to us try and unpack the trainwreck that was the 93rd Academy Awards.

Oscar Predictions

With the Academy Awards this weekend, we decided to spend this episode discussing which movies and actors we want to win, and which we think will win. Some of the categories are absolutely stacked, so hopefully it should be a great night where some of our favorite movies get some well deserved recognition.

Kid 90

This week we discuss the documentary from Soleil Moon Frye, Kid 90. Initially we believed this to be a doc that would scratch that certain nostalgic 90’s itch that we have from time to time, and while it succeeds it doing that, it is also a deeply personal, tragic, beautiful, and uplifting story. Tears were definitely shed while watching this one.

So if you haven’t watched this one yet, stop what you’re doing, it’s available on Hulu, watch it, then listen to us gush over how powerful this film is.

Enjoy!

Movie Night: Hoosiers

As another March Madness comes to an end, we look back at one of the most iconic basketball movies of all time, Hoosiers. With 75% of the COtR team being born and raised in Indiana, this movie forced upon us a lot as children. Did it hold up for us as well as we hoped? Was it able to be an exception to Ryan’s “No Sports Movies” rule? Did Roy ever find out what a “Hoosier” actually is? These answers and more in this week’s episode.

Boss Level

More and more movies seem to be going directly to streaming services, often with very little fanfare. This week we all watched one of these movies and are the better for it. Boss Level is yet another time loop film, and although this plot device can annoy some viewers, we had an absolute blast. We all strongly recommend you go and stream this on Hulu, then you can come back and listen to our episode.

Zack Snyder's Justice League

We have a lot of opinion’s on the “movie” this week, and they are all over the spectrum. Is this version of Justice League better than Whedon’s? You don’t even have to listen to the episode for the answer, it is definitely better. However this doesn’t mean that it is good. It’s complicated, and we ramble on for a bit about how a movie can be both bad and good at the same time.

WandaVision

This week we are giving are general thoughts about WandaVision. I don’t know why you would listen if you haven’t seen the show, but it is very spoiler heavy as we talk about how this influences the MCU, and where the character will go from here. We also make fun of the people who think they know all the answers as soon as the first episode aired, only to end up with egg on their face. So sit back and relax as we once again dip our toes into the cool waters of the MCU.

Enjoy!

Movie Night: Army of Darkness

The episode this week is really a microcosm of our lives; just a bunch of nerds, sitting in basements, talking about the greatness of Army of Darkness. It is hard to believe that this movie is almost 30 years old, but it is still the gold standard for schlocky, cult classic, cinema. Do some of the sequences show their age? Yes. Do those silly moments make the movie even better? That’s up to you, but we were laughing pretty hard.

So if you want to listen to us gush over one of our favorites,… … come get some.

Enjoy!

Movie Night: SpaceCamp

There were a few technical problems with the intro this week, but we still managed to persevere and give you a solid episode. This week we went with the 1986 movie, SpaceCamp. Like many of our choices, some of us had seen it, and others were completely in the dark. It mostly stood the test of time, but I am sure it was propped up by a stellar cast, and a fine score by John Williams.

Movie Night: The Naked Gun

We had a lot of concerns about this week’s pick. Comedies seems to age poorly, especially ones from this era, where writers didn’t care if their scripts were overtly racist and homophobic. Naked Gun was not nearly as bad as we thought it might be. There were still some cringeworthy parts, but mostly just because the jokes seem to be geared towards the “13 year old kid who was watching this after their parents went to sleep” crowd. That also happened to be our kind of movie as well.

Enjoy!

Movie Night: Inside Man

Almost 15 years after it was released. a couple of us watched Spike Lee’s Inside Man for the first time, while a couple of us revisited it for the first time in many many years. We all had praises and criticisms, which is unusual on a show where we all normally dig end and defend one side or another.

When is the last time you watched this one? Thoughts? What should we watch on one of our movie nights? We will take your suggestions, we’re mostly open to new stuff.

The Best of 2020

It wouldn’t have been an accurate show about 2020 unless we had a number of technical difficulties. Hopefully you don’t really notice them, and if you do, hopefully you will please be very understanding. We still had a great time judging each other’s lists, while fiercely defending our own. We hope that your lists are full of all the movies that helped you make it through last year.

Enjoy!

Movie Night: Mulholland Drive

I know that we said we were going to give you our Best of 2020 show this week, but we all wanted to do a little more research. Instead, Roy really shocked us all by picking the David Lynch classic, Mulholland Drive. None of us really felt like we understood it much better than the last time we watched it, but maybe there is some humor to be found in our general confusion.

The Worst of 2020

I know, I know, how could anyone possibly complain about anything in regards to 2020. I also know that with the very long list a history changing problems last year, that our opinions on some of the movies seems pretty trivial. I can’t disagree with that sentiment. But getting together (virtually) every week to watch and talk about movies was one of the ways we found our own balance last year, so just bare with us as we discuss the films that were awful and the ones that “didn’t make us mad, they just disappointed us”. No, but some of those movies also made us mad.

Enjoy!
