Till Death

This week we watched the new Megan Fox thriller, Till Death. This movie kind of came out of nowhere and really surprised us. We did still to our namesake and got a little lost in the weeds about one particular scene, but other than that we tried to stick to singing the praises of this taut movie going experience.

Pig

When we first heard about a movie being released in which Nicholas Cage plays a man looking for his kidnapped pig, we started to assume things about the movie. We knew the actor that Nicholas Cage had become, almost a parody of a parody, and the silly premise seemed to be leading down of path similar to that of John Wick. Quite simply, we were so very very wrong. This movie surprised us more than we could have imagined.

The Tomorrow War

Imagine that you are are living in the future, you are going about your everyday life, just trying to get by. One day, aliens begin to invade, and the population of the earth is decimated. The life you built, the people you love, all gone. You sit there, as the world is crumbling around you, and you think that things could literally not get any worse. Then you find out that Chris Pratt is the only hope for the human race. Ouch. That has got to sting. It’s like getting shot, but then also getting a paper cut at the very end.

Anyway…The Tomorrow War.

Black Widow

This week we were finally able to watch a new MCU movie…IN THE THEATER! We were also able to record this episode together, which also caused a few audio problems, so if it seemed a little echoey, that’s why. But we hoped that they joy we had sitting around a table together was enough to buy some good will, and we promise to work on the audio more in the future.

Rewind: 1997

This week the four of us took a trip back to 1997 to discuss the good, the bad, and the really really really bad. Personally, 1997 was right around the time I started going headlong into movies because it turned out that there were very few things to do in my small town besides go to the video store, and so that is what I did 3 or 4 nights a week. And none of that fancy Blockbuster Video, or less fancy Hollywood Video, but rather the real salt of the earth, mom & pop shops. Like many of the movies we’ve watched lately, this week was rich with nostalgia, and an absolute blast to research and record.

Movie Night: The Hunted (1995)

The movie this week was a pure nostalgia pick, as there really aren’t a lot of reasons to watch the 1995 action/thriller, The Hunted. I was hoping to capture the same magic I felt when I watched this movie 26 years ago, but it turns out that there are only so many perfect moments in a life, and you can’t recreate no matter how hard you try. Instead I was left with on of the weirdest sex scenes in recent memory. Thanks a lot, Christopher Lambert, you really know how to take the fun out of everything.

Godzilla vs. Kong

I know it’s been awhile since this one came out, but maybe that mean you’ve had plenty of time to sit down and watch this movie that really lives up to the title, Godzilla vs. Kong. In the past, this franchise has really divided the four of us, so this monster mash up really had a tough audience at COtR. There are some complaints, but maybe not from the person you’re thinking of.

In the Heights

There is no reason to beat around the bush, we loved this movie. If you’re comfortable with the idea, go to the theater and watch it. Maybe you should go see it multiple times. If you still aren’t ready to be around the world, stream it on HBOMax as much as you can. We shouldn’t live in a world where Mortal Kombat is more commercially successful than In the Heights. Do your part!

Cruella

There are so many great actors in Cruella, Emma Stone, Emma Thompson, Mark Strong, that it’s almost too bad that they are all overshadowed by another performance. That’s not to say that any of them did a poor job, they were all great, but sometimes you must give credit where it is due. I guess you will just need to listen to find out who the real star of the latest Disney live action adaption really is. ;-)

Wishmaster

We have been doing research for our next Rewind episode, but sometimes there’s a movie that sets itself apart from the fray. In a year that gave us Titanic and Good Will Hunting it could have been easy to miss Wishmaster, but do yourself a favor and make 90 minutes in your life this gem.

Army of the Dead

It’s been a very long time, but this week two of us actually sat in the same room and recorded an episode. The audio may sound a little different, but it was great to be back. Of course the only movie that could inspire us to break ourselves out of the “virtual” hell that we’ve been living in was Army of the Dead. We had many many MANY thoughts on this one, as we bounce back and forth between praise and criticism. The only thing we knew for sure…this movie didn’t need to be 2.5 hours long.

Enjoy!

Mortal Kombat

Hey…Hey you…GET OVER HERE…and listen to our new episode on Mortal Kombat. Somehow this franchise is still relevant more than 25 years after the original, and thanks to Mortal Kombat Annihilation, the bar was set staggeringly low. The latest incarnation did mange to clear that bar, but if you want to know by how much, you’ll just have to listen.

Director Spotlight: F. Gary Gray

On this week’s Director Spotlight episode, we discuss the films of F. Gary Gray. The spectrum is wide when it comes to the quality of each of his movies, but when he crushes it, he really really crushes it. Some of his movies are some the most rewatchable ones I have in my collection, while others I hope I never have to see again. So sit back as we break down the the highs and lows of F. Gary Gray.

Nobody

I think we all knew the day would come when Bob Odenkirk would become an action star. At 58 years of age, and thanks to Nobody, that day has finally arrived. Sometimes we leave make you listen to an episode to find out how we felt about a movie, but this time we will just say that we all loved it, you should go and watch it if you haven’t seen it, then circle back around and listen to this episode. It’s just the kind of movie we all need right now.

Oscars...WTF?!

So many thoughts about the Academy Awards this year. Believe it or not there were plenty of things that we really liked about the unusual format, but somehow it still turned into one of the biggest messes ever for the Academy. So many questions that we'll never get answers to.

So if you were just as confused as we were, sit back and listen to us try and unpack the trainwreck that was the 93rd Academy Awards.

Oscar Predictions

With the Academy Awards this weekend, we decided to spend this episode discussing which movies and actors we want to win, and which we think will win. Some of the categories are absolutely stacked, so hopefully it should be a great night where some of our favorite movies get some well deserved recognition.

Kid 90

This week we discuss the documentary from Soleil Moon Frye, Kid 90. Initially we believed this to be a doc that would scratch that certain nostalgic 90’s itch that we have from time to time, and while it succeeds it doing that, it is also a deeply personal, tragic, beautiful, and uplifting story. Tears were definitely shed while watching this one.

So if you haven’t watched this one yet, stop what you’re doing, it’s available on Hulu, watch it, then listen to us gush over how powerful this film is.

Movie Night: Hoosiers

As another March Madness comes to an end, we look back at one of the most iconic basketball movies of all time, Hoosiers. With 75% of the COtR team being born and raised in Indiana, this movie forced upon us a lot as children. Did it hold up for us as well as we hoped? Was it able to be an exception to Ryan’s “No Sports Movies” rule? Did Roy ever find out what a “Hoosier” actually is? These answers and more in this week’s episode.

Boss Level

More and more movies seem to be going directly to streaming services, often with very little fanfare. This week we all watched one of these movies and are the better for it. Boss Level is yet another time loop film, and although this plot device can annoy some viewers, we had an absolute blast. We all strongly recommend you go and stream this on Hulu, then you can come back and listen to our episode.

Zack Snyder's Justice League

We have a lot of opinion’s on the “movie” this week, and they are all over the spectrum. Is this version of Justice League better than Whedon’s? You don’t even have to listen to the episode for the answer, it is definitely better. However this doesn’t mean that it is good. It’s complicated, and we ramble on for a bit about how a movie can be both bad and good at the same time.

Enjoy!
