2022 was kind of a rough year for comic book movies with several of them showing up on our “Worst of" lists. Can this trend be turned around this year? If Marvels first film of the year, Ant-Man & the Wasp: Quantumania, is any indication, then we still can’t answer this question. There are plenty of things to like in the MCU’s latest go, but just as many things seems to come up short. In that way it’s a lot like this podcast.

Every year Roy and Kira spend all of Super Bowl Sunday marathoning several Oscar nominated films. The line up this year was The Banshees of Inisherin, The Triangle of Sadness, Empire of Light, and Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio. Lots of highs and lows, and some very unwelcome themes for the day, but maybe more enjoyable that watching a football game.

Another year of movies in the book and another episode where we reflect on what we thought were the best movies of 2022. We know that everyone won’t agree with us, we rarely completely agree with each other, but between the four of us, there us surely some common ground out there. Plus there were some legitimate surprises this year, and that’s always entertaining.

This week we head back to the woods with one of the films we watch during the Cabin Chronicles. We use the word “film" because “movie” just doesn’t seem to carry the same weight, especially when speaking about Airheads. It was pretty apparent early on that Brendan Fraser was destined to be nominated for an Oscar, and while we are happy for his recognition in The Whale, some might say this was an even more powerful performance.

Here is another fine episode from the “Cabin Chronicles” series. While Friday the 13th Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan isn’t a ver good movie, the episode that movie spawned is pretty solid. Plus it was late, and we were all a little loopy, so you know that helps. Maybe next time we will let people outside the show pick all the movies.

We are a couple of weeks into the new year, and that means we are all scrambling to watch all the 2022 movies we missed in order to make out “Best and Worst” lists. Hey, speaking of the worst movies of last year, here is our episode on Moonfall. Our feelings toward the first Avatar film range from enjoyment to stunning indifference, but not from the people you might think. This week we are discussing the new sequel, Avatar: The Way of Water. Not to give too much away, but minds were changed in each direction. At least we all have plenty to say, both good and bad, about this larger than life movie.

Nothing says “Christmas” like a movie about ritual suicide in feudal Japan. This week is a Patron request, and just to prove that we can’t be bought off by our Patreon supporters, some of us liked this film, and some of us did not. I know the tension is palpable, but all you have to do is lister to the episode, and you’ll know who thought what. It’s very exciting.

An autobiographical film about one of our favorite directors seems like a perfect fit for us here at COtR, but could this movie live up the our expectations, or was to just a little too self-aggrandizing? We can’t speak for everyone out there, and there are certainly plenty of people who just like to hate on Spielberg, but if that’s the podcast you’re looking for, you may want to look somewhere else.

Our plan was to do a movie night and then record on the new Hellraiser movie that was just released on Hulu. However, it turns out that 75% had never seen the original, so we decided to pivot and now this week is all about the disgustingly wonderful 1987 film, Hellraiser. This is, hands down, one of the squishiest movies of all time. God bless practical effects.

This week is another request episode, and definitely one of the stranger things we’ve watched, but in a good way. The movie is High School USA, and if you haven’t heard of it, then you may need to read up on the made for tv movies from the early 80’s. However this cast of TV all stars really deliver the goods, and this movie is definitely worth a watch, or maybe worth watching again. The whole movie is available on YouTube, so there’s no excuse.
