Bill & Ted Face the Music

The movie that we’ve all been waiting 29 year for has finally be gifted to the world. This is a franchise that has sparked many debates among us at COTR, with some loving them, others liking them, and maybe some people actively dislike them. So in the these crazy times, could Bill & Ted manage to build a bridge between our preconceived notions about this particular property? I mean…maybe? I guess you’ll just have to tune in and find out.

Director Spotlight: John McTiernan

This week we bring you another Director Spotlight episode. For John McTiernan the highs were very high (Die Hard, Predator, The Hunt for Red October) but my god were his lows some of the absolute worst (13th Warrior, Rollerball). Join us as we discuss the complete works of someone we thought was a legend, only to discover that maybe he’s human, just like the rest of us.

Enjoy!

Palm Springs

If you’ve seen the trailer for Palm Springs it would be easy to compare it to other films that use time loops as a narrative device. Obviously everyone wants to make a comparison to Groundhog’s Day and just write it off as such. This romantic dramedy, starring Andy Samberg and Cristin Milioti, is so much more than trailer lets on. So go and watch this movie on Hulu, and then come back and listen to this episode.

The Vast of Night

Sometime, while we were all mostly stuck in our homes, a small science fiction movie was released on Amazon Prime called The Vast of Night. Sometimes the movies released in these crazy times feel more special than they are just because we are all desperate for anything new. Does The Vast of Night fall into this category, or is it actually a good, if not great, sci-fi entry. Guess you should probably listen to this episode to find out.

Hamilton

Disney+ gave us all a treat this summer by releasing the stage production recording of Hamilton. There is no reason to leave you in suspense, we were all huge fans of this show before we saw it, and now we are even more impressed by this “once in a generation” show. So prepare yourselves, all we do is just gush about how much we love this musical.

Pete Davidson Double Feature

This week we watch two movies featuring the SNL star, Pete Davidson. First we discuss the latest film from Judd Apatow, The King of Staten Island. In the vacuum COVID has created, this movie is one of the few “big” movies to be released. Next, we watched the lesser known (though maybe better movie) Big Time Adolescence. So sit back and relax as we try and channel some of Pete’s BDE for this week’s episode.

The Old Guard

We took a couple of weeks off to prepare ourselves for the new Netflix action movie, The Old Guard. When the trailer first dropped, we responded with mixed levels of excitement. There’s a change that some minds were changed from what we thought this movie would be. We also catch up one what we’ve been doing, since we clearly haven’t been talking to each other.

Jaws

Sometimes you use the 45th anniversary of a movie as an excuse to talk about one of your favorite movies. The OG summer blockbuster is just as good now as it was in 1975, but now also serves as tragic allegory for the world we live in now. So sit back, try to relax, and don’t go in the water.

Artemis Fowl

Ooof, I don’t even know where to start with this one. Clearly Disney knew that this movie was in trouble by the fact that it was supposed to be released last summer. I know that when you spend over a hundred million dollars on a film, that you are kind of stuck with it, but even as a direct to Disney+ release, it feels cheap and unnecessary. Anyway, I hope I didn’t tip our hand too much on how we felt about this week’s movie, but figured you deserved to know the truth.

Director Spotlight: Renny Harlin

We had so much fun doing the homework for this one. Even though we can't see each other yet, we watched 7 films from Renny Harlin together online, in what Roy named, The Renny-sance. That joke is the reason you have this extra long episode of COTR. Were all of the movies good? That depends on which of us you ask. Did someone get up and secretly walk to his neighbor’s house during one of the movies? It is certainly possible. Does Renny know how to blow shit up? You’re damn right he does.

The Wrong Missy and The Lovebirds

This week we discuss two Netflix movies, The Wrong Missy and The Lovebirds. In a time where original content is scarce, these two movies have been very popular, but do we share in that excitement? I mean, you kind of have to listen to the show to find out…that’s kind of the whole point of this. We also talk about why comedies can be an especially polarizing genre, and what movie theaters will look like going forward. We’re all over the map this week.

More Quarantine Movies!

Another week of not seeing the outside world means another week of whatever random stuff we decide to watch. This week we have two Kings on the show, and we are definitely better for it. Roy & Kira King tell us all about their stay-at-home marathon day, and the kinds of movies that like to make the other watch. There’s a little something for everyone in this episode. Action, horror, drama, comedy, science fiction,…er…Animal Crossing. I’m just saying, we covered all our bases.

Enjoy!

The Half of It and quarantine catchup

This week we discuss the new Netflix comedy, The Half of It along with all the other stuff we’ve been watching lately. We try not to spoil anything, so even if you haven’t seen what we are talking about, you’ll still be alright to watch this one. Time is slipping away from us now. Things are getting so bad that Sean is thinking about doing a full watch of The Simpsons. He may never be able to watch a movie again after that commitment.

Extraction

Some movies come along at a perfect time in our collective lives and manage to make things 1% better for awhile. Extraction could have just been lost in the mix of the seemingly endless supply of Netflix content, but when there are no new movies being released, this basic premise, Chris Hemsworth action flick becomes so much more. We are also joined by a very special guest this week, and though she didn’t seem to appreciate how the rest of us are all built like fat Thor, we still had a blast recording this episode. I hope everyone continues to stay safe out there.

Enjoy!

Fantasy Island

This week we talk about the Blumhouse horror film, Fantasy Island. This quickly becomes a debate about whether this movie is bad, good bad, or just good. If you’ve listened to the show, you can probably guess who comes down where. We also briefly discuss The Rhythm Section and other movies and shows we’ve been watching while stuck in our homes. I hope everyone is staying safe out there.

Enjoy!

Favorite Fight Scenes

This week we decided that recording remotely was getting to be too easy, so we also through in the 3 hour time difference with our guest, just to make scheduling a little more fun. Theme for this east coast/west coast crossover? Favorite fight scenes…or best fight scenes…just kind of depends on what criteria you use to build your list. Since we are still playing by quarantine rules, there are no rules, and you can make your list however you want. Should we give you a list of 5 each? You bet? Should we also ramble on after about other things we wanted on the list? Oh, you know it! We all basically turned into Roy, and bent the rules to whatever we want. We hope you’re staying safe out there.

Enjoy!

Tiger King

Yeah, I know this isn’t a movie, but since we are all stuck inside, and somehow everyone in the world has watched this “documentary”, we decided to do an episode on it. Is it good? Is it awful? Does it make you want to scrub your eyes out with disinfectant after? Can all those answers be “yes”? These are the questions we wrestled with on this week’s episode of COTR.

Enjoy!

The Hunt

Look, I know that everything is kind of awful right now, and it is pretty much impossible to look anywhere without seeing something that breaks out heart. I don’t really have a solution to those problems, but maybe listening to nerds talk about a movie that you maybe haven’t seen is just the kind of distraction you need from the constant barrage of awful that we all seem to be taking. This week we talk about The Hunt and some of the movies we’ve been watching together online as we all try our best to stay away from pretty much everything. I hope everyone is staying safe, and if you have any movies you’d like us to do an episode on, please just let us know.

Enjoy!

The Invisible Man

This week we struggle through some technical difficulties to bring you a new episode while we are all on lockdown. We discuss The Invisible Man and a couple of our attempts to do a movie night with Kast. I know that everyone is getting a little stir crazy out there, and while this show may not help you cope with everything that is going on, it is helping us. So thanks for listening to us try and find some catharsis while the world burns.

Enjoy!
