I know everybody is filled with fingernail-biting anticipation to hear me and Drew's favorite films of 2011, so I have placed two pics here on the page as a sort of podcast teaser. One represents a top five film for me, and one represents a top five film for Drew. I don't want to give away which is which, so I supposed you will just have to listen in...
Sherlock Holmes and The Muppets
This should have been up sooner, but you know how it is this time of year. Every free minute has to be spent catching up on nominated Oscar films. Plus if you think these shows are already too long, you should hear them before I edit out that random chatter and beer breaks. Just wait until we do the best/worst of 2011 episode...it might be 5 hours long. I will probably spend at least 2 hours talking about how much I hated Bridesmaids. For now, you will just have to enjoy this show.
The Descendants and Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol
This will probably be our last show of 2011. Luckily, we were able to go out on top with The Descendants and the new Mission Impossible film, which should not be confused with the terrible Commadore 64 game, Impossible Mission. Goodbye 2011, you were really full of ups and downs, and then some more downs, then really bottoming out with the The Human Centipede 2. If this show doesn't interest you, at least listen to the first 2 minutes to find out what sadly constitutes as a nightmare for me. Happy Holidays, and all that jazz.
50/50 and Troll Hunter
I'd say there's a 50/50 chance you'll like troll-based "found footage" Norwegian film, Troll Hunter, but a 100% chance you will love our podcast on 50/50. HAHAHHAHAH, you see what I did there? Pure, unadulterated wit. And I'm pretty sure that's what you come here for.
Paranormal Activitiy 3 & The Human Centipede 2
Halloween is here again, and that means an episode of horror films. There are some terrifying things in this episode: creepy children, sadistic torture, Ryan sporting a mustache that would make Polanski proud. If you haven't watched any of the previous Paranormal Activity or Human Centipede films, you might not want to listen. We do spoil the plots of all the older films in setting up our conversation for the new installments. Maybe our spoiling the films will prevent you from listening to this episode. If so, I'm sorry. Perhaps in listening to this podcast you choose to avoid certain films. If so, you're welcome.
Attack the Block & Tucker and Dale vs. Evil
We don't want you to think that we have sold out, only doing big budget, wildly popular films, like Tree of Life. To help out our indie cred, we watched Attack the Block, a British alien invasion movie, and Tucker and Dale vs. Evil, not British, no aliens, but rather hillbillies and a twist on the horror genre. You may have to work a little harder to if you want to watch these movies, but sometimes movies are worth a little extra effort. Don't worry though, we do spend a few minutes talking about Over the Top for those people who like their movies packed with arm wrestling and Kenny Loggins music.
Cowboys and Aliens, Rise of the Planet of the Apes, Dream Home
I know it has been a long time since we posted a show, but Ryan is just now recovering from Cowboys and Aliens. I think you will find that this show was worth the wait. Where else are you going to find out about Dream Home? Ebert? Not likely. You also get a little ape action too. This is a fine show with which to say "goodbye" to the summer. Enjoy
Tree of Life
Blockbuster season is upon us, and we invited Amanda Trice to sit in with us to discuss one of the biggest of the summer. Stalwart leading man Brad Pitt plays the lead in “Tree of Life.” Pitt plays O’Brien, an inventor and thrill seeker. He and his estranged wife, played by Jessica Chastain, get themselves in to a number of ill-advised predicaments in this rom/com/thriller which can only be described as Inspector Gadget meets Mission Impossible. In the middle there’s some sort of hokeyness about our place in the universe, and how we deal with loss, and the nature of God, but that portion of the film is fleeting. Mostly it’s about Brad Pitt fighting dinosaurs.
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows-Part 2
After 10 years and 8 movies, the Harry Potter Saga has finally come to a close. Was the last installment everything we hoped it would be? Were the different arcs resolved as well as they were in the books? What parts of the movie made us cry? Why did Morgan sign on to be in Dolphin Tale? Come on Morgan! You were in The Shawshank Redemption! Now you are giving tailless dolphins prosthetic tails? And...Harry Connick Jr. is in it, and being in a movie with him has never helped anyone's career. Did you lose a bet? Yes, there are a great many questions that are posed in this weeks show. I can't promise that we will answer them all, but we certainly had fun making fun of Dolphin Tale.
Also joining us this week were Courtney Felix and Tyler Johnson.
Super 8 - Troll 2 - Best Worst Movie
There is a little something for everyone in this episode. We review a good movie, a bad movie, and a good movie about a bad movie. If only we could find a bad movie about a good movie...like a 6 hour finger puppet retelling of Citizen Kane... and all of the dialogue is written in haiku form...and the camera is always just slightly out of focus...and it stars Hillary Swank. Gives me chills just thinking about Hillary Swank continuing to star in movies. This episode does run a little long, almost an hour I believe, but when you are talking about Super 8 and Troll 2 it is impossible to be brief. Enjoy the show and please watch the amazing PSA from the Alamo Drafthouse. http://youtu.be/1L3eeC2lJZs
X-Men: First Class
It has been a while since we recorded a show. We desperately wanted to watch Mr. Popper's Penguins, but sadly it hadn't been released yet. We decided to fill the penguin shaped holes in our hearts with the newest X-Men movie. Now the 3rd X-Men film was not very good, and the Wolverine movie was considerably more unwatchable than the worst episode of American Idol. How would the new one stack up? I guess you will just have to listen to the show. We also talk about several other summer movies that I am sure will end up being worse than Mr. Popper's Penguins.
Hobo with a Shotgun and Thor
It is kind of hard to miss the media blitz for the latest Marvel film Thor, but just as entertaining, and maybe even more so, is the grindhouse inspired movie Hobo with a Shotgun. Both movies promise action packed sequences against the forces of evil, but only one of them has a hobo...with a shotgun. If hearing about these two films isn't enough for you, there is also a quick review of the new Fast 5, and an original theme song for...you guessed it...Hobo with a Shotgun. http://youtu.be/ssHEAOrAdCU
Insidious and AHHHHHH ZOMBIES!
Even though it may look like I was attacked by a zombie mid-sentence, that is actually the name of a film, also know as "Wasting Away." One title is way better than the other. I will let you decide which. We also review Insidious, directed by James Wan of "Saw" fame. Wan is also rumored to be AHHHHHH ZOMBIES!
Black Death and Source Code
This week reviews of director Christopher Smith's new film "Black Death," which isn't nearly as cheery as the name implies, as well as director Duncan Jones new outing, "Source Code." I believe Jones is related to some moderately famous 70s musician. Can't remember who for sure, but if I had to put my money on it I would guess Captain Beefheart.
Drive Angry and Rubber
Nicolas Cage makes yet another fine film, "Drive Angry." To accompany the review of "Drive Angry" we watch a film about a killer tire. A psychokinetic killer tire. Plus we briefly touch on the departure of Darren Aronofsky from the new Wolverine film. All-in-all a fine episode.
Academy Awards -- The After Party!
Drew and I fall in to a deep depression after Fincher and the Social Network go down hard in the face of an "Academy" film. Whatever the hell that means. Seriously, Tom Hooper? That guy directed Texas Chainsaw Massacre! Wait a second.....maybe that was Tobe Hooper. Eh, whatever. Also we try and decipher just how high James Franco was. Probably really high.
Academy Awards- Part I
This was the show we recorded the afternoon before the Oscars. Listen as we predict that Fincher would win Best Director for The Social Network, and that Franco and Hathaway wouldn't do a good job. At least we weren't wrong about everything. Also, if the mere sound of Ryan and I talking drives you crazy, fear not, we have two guests with us for this show. Thanks to Courtney Felix and Matt Trueblood for joining us. Matt and Courtney don't really know much about movie, I mean they both thought King's Speech was going to win Best Picture. No way that happens, not when Ryan and I were voting for Social Network. All kinds of wrong in this show. Enjoy.
Best/Worst of 2010
With the Academy Awards a mere two weeks away, we figure we had better go ahead and talk about what we thought were the best and worst films of 2010. Where will Unstoppable fall? It could go either way. There are also some honorable mentions for movies that might not be the best of the year, but are still a "must see". We also briefly discuss Winter's Bone...you may know it from all the nominations it has received lately. Proving once again that the Academy member feel compelled to nominate an indie film just so they can say they did. Enjoy.
King's Speech and Gatoroid
This week Drew and I watched Mega Python Vs. Gatoroid, then the King's Speech. Then a second helping of Mega Python Vs. Gatoroid. The way we figured it, you can never have too much Debbie Gibson AND Tiffany...yes, both 80s pop stars share top billing...sandwiched around a grandiose Academy Award nominated period piece. .
.
.
Mmmmm.....Debbie Gibson/Tiffany sandwich......
True Grit and The Social Network
On the surface, this week's show appears to be one of the most intelligent yet. Ryan and I watched Oscar contending films True Grit and The Social Network. We also talk about number of other films that we have watched over the last week or so. We watched films from France, Belgium, Australia, and Sweden. We play it straight almost the whole time, then the "Beer Fairy" makes a visit. I think it adds to the show.
